2017 ANNUAL MEETING
Saturday, October 7, 2017

Evergreen Baptist Church SGV
323 Workman Mill Rd.
La Puente, CA 91746-2443

Dear Partners in Ministry and Mission of the Kingdom of God,

Greetings in the name of our Lord Christ.

I welcome you to the American Baptist Churches of Los Angeles, Southwest and Hawaii annual corporate meeting and celebration. Since 1895, American Baptists have been meeting to celebrate their life and mission in Jesus Christ.

Annual gathering is all about worship, fellowship, equip and most of all enjoy our lives together in Jesus Christ. Annual meetings display the grandeur of our multi-ethnic Regional life.

This is a special year for me. After 46 years in active ministry, and 22 years of that as your Executive Minister, I am retiring from professional ministry. I hope to continue as our Lord leads my avocation to serve the Kingdom of God.

We have chosen “Gratitude” as our 2017 Annual Gathering theme. There will be dynamic worship and prayer time, communion, “critical conversations” on ministry, and a time to fellowship with each other around a delicious lunch.

I am eagerly looking forward to meet and greet you on Saturday, October 7, 2017. As our Lord Jesus Christ promised, “...Where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them” Matthew 18:20. With excitement, let us greet each other on October 7 at Evergreen Baptist Church of San Gabriel Valley

in the Risen Christ,
Dr. Samuel S. Chetti

THEME: “Gratitude” – I Thank God Every Time I Remember You

SCRIPTURE: Philippians 1:3

“I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now. I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ. It is right for me to think this way about all of you, because you hold me in your heart,[d] for all of you share in God’s grace[e] with me, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel. For God is my witness, how I long for all of you with the compassion of Christ Jesus. And this is my prayer, that your love may overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight to help you to determine what is best, so that in the day of Christ you may be pure and blameless, having produced the harvest of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God.”

Merriam Webster definition … the free flow of meaning between two or more people.

  • WHAT? DO DISCIPLESHIP! – Rev. Paul ReinhardReinhard_Paul.jpg
  • Christ called His church to the primary task of making disciples. How are we doing what He called us to do?

  • Mar_Chow_Melanie.jpgBe Our Guest? – Rev. Melanie Mar Chow
  • As we live in confusing times and spaces, how can our churches connect with young adults and vice versa to make a meaningful connection? The time together will most likely raise more questions, but come and learn what answers God would have for us.

  • Who Stole My Church – Change in the Church - Rev. Dr. Shawn ZambrowsSHAWN_ZAMBROWS.jpg
  • Often older adults in our churches feel intimidated or unappreciated when changes are being made to attract or keep younger generations. At the same time young adults are giving up on church in record numbers. In the midst of this God calls us to BE the Church.

Is it enough to change styles of worship or church structures in order to make church meaningful for younger generations? How do we know what is needed? How do we find out?

  • How do we shift our collective mindset from attractional to missional?
  • What can we do to truly listen to all the voices in our congregation as well as voices in the surrounding community?
  • How can we help people to embrace effective change, both celebrating the past and anticipating what God will do in the future?

  • Long_Tim_prior_to_crop.jpgMoving out of the Shadows – Rev. Tim Long
Often our church facility, not to mention the church itself, serves mainly as a backdrop to the life of our neighborhoods and barrios. We occupy the shadows with little visibility to our neighbors. We find it difficult to be the blessing that is expected of God’s people. Together with pastors from Tijuana who have recently led their churches in response to the Haitian refugee crisis, we will delve into the motivation, obstacles, challenges and fulfillment of becoming more and more a part of the very life that unfolds daily around us.

  • • Connecting Sunday Faith and Monday Work - Rev. Dr. Jonathan Wu

    Pastor_Jonathan_Wu.jpg

Over 98 percent of all Christians work in occupations other than as pastor or missionary. Each local church needs to help their people bridge their faith from Sunday to Monday, to integrate their following Jesus into all of their life.
