American Baptist Churches of Los Angeles, Southwest & Hawaii

December 21st, 2022

A celebration of Pastor William Campbell's ministry was held recently in Pasadena upon his retirement. He was raised at Second Baptist Church of Los Angeles. After he received his call to ministry and completed seminary, he served several churches. He concluded his ministry as the pastor of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church, where he has served since 2001. Family, church members, friends, and pastors from around Los Angeles joined to thank Pastor Campbell for his role as a father and ministry and for his friendship and partnership in ministry and the pursuit of justice.

Rev. Van Tarpley, pastor of First Baptist Church of Bostonia and Regional Resource Minister for San Diego churches recently sent this report:

"Our local ABCOFLASH community took part in building tiny cottages to house homeless single mothers with children in the East County. Let's take a moment to thank God that six formerly-unhoused families have a roof over their heads. A sign of the success of this project is that San Diego is now seeking community partners to scale up the effort. If you would be interested in hosting tiny cottages or a sprung structure shelter or know of organizations that might be interested, please let me know!"

During these unprecedented times, we have learned new ways to transform, exist and embody the kingdom with the same goal to reflect the gospel. Through the deep commitment and faith of the church, significant efforts have been made to remain connected and build relationships within their congregations and community. The Retired Ministers and Missionaries Offering (RMMO) acknowledges and appreciates the extraordinary commitment of such church leaders, congregants, and missionaries in our own time but during previous challenging periods. Many churches will collect the RMMO offering in December each year. Click here for the 2022 RMMO promotional guide. Click here for the bulletin insert.

Pastor Htwe Din Nyunt took a group from his church to the Thai/Myanmar border in October. He wrote: "By God's grace, three families of the Burmese Christian Church in Covina went to the Thai/Myanmar border for the third time to provide humanitarian assistance to more than 200 families who fled the war. Rice, oil, ramen sardines, medicine, and clothing are some of the items we donated to those in need. We were able to visit and donate not only food but also give financial donations. In addition, we were able to help Buddhists who have moved and settled in the area along with Muslim children who needed food and support. Thanks to everyone who participated in the October (5-17) trip through prayers and donations."

Dear Partners in Ministry,

Greetings in the Name of Jesus! I pray that you are doing well. This pandemic has impacted all of us and especially our youth and our ministry with them. The Winter Youth Retreat in January will address how the pandemic has affected us and where God has been amid our experiences. This is your invitation to bring your youth, young adults, and leaders to Winter Youth Retreat 2023.

WYR is an excellent opportunity for youth and young adults to connect with God and for your church to strengthen the bonds within your group of young people.

If you haven't brought a group to the retreat before, please consider this opportunity for your youth! If you have brought groups before, we hope to see your group again! We will gather at Camp Cedar Crest in the mountains above San Bernardino on January 27-29, 2023, for WYR!

The information flyer is below; the same information is on the WYR website, where you'll find the forms and additional information about the retreat. Just so you know, to get the best price, you'll need to pay a deposit in mid-December!

Thank you for prayerfully considering WYR for your youth and young adults! Please be in touch if you have any questions!

In Christ,

Doug

Rev. Joel Fairley

Rev. Joel Fairley has retired from the ministry having most recently served at First Baptist Church of Claremont.

He reflected on his ministry in a recent Facebook post: "It was 42 years ago in August that the kid with the big hair and cheesy mustache was ordained into Pastoral ministry with the American Baptists. Fast forward to now through years of highs and the lowest of lows filled with God's Love and Grace, to the place that I got to be my Mom's Pastor. This Sunday July 31, I preach my last sermon at the First Baptist church of Claremont, and the last sermon of my professional career."

Congratulations Pastor Joel - enjoy your retirement!
This year's Annual Meeting will feature:
Michael Beck - Fresh Expressions
Larry Acosta - City to City
Five workshops in English
Three workshops in Spanish
and more!

The Annual Meeting brochure has been sent to all pastors and those on our mailing list!

Melanie Baggao - Global Servant to Lebanon is back in the U.S. She'll be in the area and would love to visit churches and connect with pastors while she's here. Invite her to a midweek gathering, or a meal, or connect with her at the ABCOFLASH Annual Meeting. Here's her most recent letter:

Back in the US...
I am finally back in the US for home assignment. "Home Assignment", also known as a furlough, is a time when global servants return to their passport country to rest, update partnering donors and churches about ministry, spend time with family, and sometimes attend to medical needs. My last home assignment was in 2019 - before the revolution in Lebanon, COVID, and the economic crisis - so I have a lot to share. My time in the US will last until the first week of January 2023. I will visit 10 states and share at 18 churches, conferences, and Bible Studies (scheduled so far). If this sounds busy, it is! In the month of Aug, I anticipate driving over 2,200 miles!
All that being said, I would appreciate it if you could join me in:
  • Praying for my travels. Most of the traveling I will do alone, so please pray for attentiveness on the road and safety.
  • Praying for my health. Thank God, I think I have managed to get over jet lag. Please pray for a good night's rest between staying at different accommodations and long drives. Please pray for my voice as I will speak a lot. Also, pray that I will not get COVID
  • Praying that I can accurately and creatively share what God wants me to share. Sometimes I only have ten minutes to share, sometimes I have two hours. Lebanon has changed A LOT since I last visited. The current reality is very hard and depressing, but God is still doing miracles in the midst of the mess. Please pray that I can share these two things faithfully.
  • Praying for my ministries in Lebanon. One of the hardest things about being Stateside is being unable to be with INSAAF, Nancy, and her neighborhood, and involved with my local church in Beirut. It was challenging to delegate and let go of some responsibilities before I left. Pray that God will give me peace about the things He is continuing to do in Lebanon without me there.
  • Practically, I have an essential need: The plans to borrow a car for several months have fallen through the last minute. Thank God that I think I have sorted out my transportation needs for Aug. so far, but I am in need of a car to borrow in Southern California from Sept. 8 through Oct. 10. This can be split into chunks of several days. It will be driven just in Orange and LA Counties with two days out to San Bernardino county. I also have insurance that will cover me and any possible damages to the car. Please let me know if you have any leads.
  • Another practical need I have: I am looking for a "home" for a very beloved bookshelf with glass doors. It's the only piece of furniture I still want to hold on to whenever I move back to the US. Since 2015, two great family friends have stored it/used it and now it needs to go somewhere else. If you live in Southern California and would like to house my bookshelf and use it, please let me know.

Rev. Jon Lambert

After 20 years of serving as the pastor of the Hacienda Heights Baptist Church Rev. Jon Lambert accepted to call to serve at a church in Twin Falls, Idaho. ABCOFLASH ANNUAL MEETING - OCTOBER 6-8, 2022
One of the features of this year's Annual Meeting is Rev. Michael Beck from FRESH EXPRESSIONS! Fresh Expressions is a global movement of churches that seek to find new and creative ways to reach people for Christ. Rev. Beck has led his church to create thirteen new Christian communities in Wildwood, Florida. Fresh Expressions allows leaders and pastors to use traditional services and innovative forms of church to live out Christ's mission. One does not replace the other but creates a mutual benefit for both-a "mixed economy of church." Click here to visit the Fresh Expressions website.

Let's discover together FRESH ways to be the church at this year's Annual Meeting through Michael Becks' presentations, Larry Acosta's message, and the Saturday workshops.

Watch for Annual Meeting details that are coming soon!

Help Save Friendship Park
Here's a request send to ABCOFLASH from Dr. Seth Clark - Please consider adding your name to the letter by July 21 to save Friendship Park at the U.S. and Mexico Border:
HI, ABC Friends,
As you might have heard, there are plans to effectively cut off access to the place the Border Church considers its sanctuary, and we now have a faith leader sign-on letter urging the government to actually take local stakeholder feedback into consideration before building two 30-ft walls surrounding the space.
Here's the letter that explains the situation with an opportunity for you to sign the letter to Alejandro Mayorkas, Secretary of Homeland Security: https://actionnetwork.org/forms/save-friendship-park-faith-leader-sign-on
I could use your help. Is there any way that you could help me distribute this call to action through some ABC networks?

Honoring the Life and Ministry of
Rev. Jung Nam Lee

Rev. Jung Nam Lee was born in Korea on December 12th, 1941, the second youngest of seven brothers. He graduated from Yonsei University in Korea in 1965 and worked for five years as a correspondent for a business newspaper in Korea. He then followed a call into ministry, moved to the United States, and matriculated at the American Baptist Seminary of the West, from which he graduated in 1975. On July 31st, 1977, he was ordained at First Baptist Church of Los Angeles, where he pastored a Korean-speaking congregation until 1987. Again, acting on faith, he felt called to plant a Korean-speaking congregation in North Hills, at the campus of Valley Park Baptist Church. He pastored that church until 2001, and from there he held various jobs, such as an editor for the Christian Herald, teaching English at the California International University, and working as a linguist for the federal government.

On May 24th, 2022, he took his last breath and went to be with the Lord. He was surrounded by his devoted wife, Hyun Soo, and his three sons, Chris, James, and John. Nonprofit Management Basics - led by Lydia Floyd

This workshop is not a How to Start a Nonprofit Class. There are great classes for that. We will look at the What, Why, Who, How, and When to help you decide to start a nonprofit. Or, if you have already created a nonprofit, have you asked yourself these questions. Churches are nonprofits too.
Here are a few of the questions we will review.
  • What do you hope to accomplish? What are your goals and objectives?
  • Who is your target population? Why do they need you?
  • Who works with you? Do you have a good board or team? Are you burnt out?
  • How are you going about it? Do you have a strategic plan?
  • When is a good time to start? If you started, do you have a calendar of activities?

May 26 2022

Dr. Jeff Woods, ABC/USA General Secretary, released this statement about the school shooting in Texas: "Our prayers are with the people and friends of Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, on the day of this senseless massacre. I was bewildered to see this news come across the screen: an 18-year-old shooter; 19 children murdered; the lives of two teachers taken, all in an elementary school location. Sometimes there are no words, but there is always scripture and the presence of the Lord is always with us. "Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God." (Romans 8:26-27) "On the day I called, you answered me, you increased the strength of my soul." (Psalm138:3)"
After the shooting at the church in Laguna Woods, Pastor Andy wrote this brief statement:

Friends,

Encountering an active shooter is a rare occurrence, despite how prevalent it seems as these incidents understandably make national news. Still, as we should be prepared for earthquakes, fires, floods, or other rare events, our churches are encouraged to have active shooter plans and training, available to church leadership. Churches may elect to have "security committees." Some churches have security guards, armed and/or unarmed, even some who carry concealed weapons. Other churches feel it is best to limit defensive weapons, especially firearms, on campus. As always, prayerfully consider what is best for your context. The following website from the LA County Sheriff's Office features details of the "Run/Hide/Fight" protocol. Additionally, there is a link to a video, with a warning for graphic violence. Hope is great, but, in itself, it is not a plan.

Praying for your safety and security in Christ,

Pastor Andy

Book introduces readers to church on San Diego-Tijuana Border
VALLEY FORGE, PA (ABNS 2/15/22)-"Church at the Wall: Stories of Hope Along the San Diego-Tijuana Border" tells the powerful story of Border Church, where people meet at the border wall on both sides for communion and worship. Situated on the western edge of the border, it overlooks the Pacific Ocean. Click here to read more

The author is Seth David Clark, D.Min., an ordained American Baptist minister and lead pastor of The First Baptist Church of National City, one of our ABCOFLASH churches. He also serves as the pastoral team's U.S. director of Border Church. Congratulations Dr. Clark on the release of your new book!
Patrick Pang, an American Baptist pastor who has served with the former American Baptist Churches of the Pacific Southwest (ABCPSW), has written a devotional autobiography, Faith Journey. Dr. Roy Medley, General Secretary Emeritus, ABCUSA, says that Patrick "is a trusted guide whose walk with Christ will reveal to you hidden treasures of hope and joy." That's why, according to Dr. Warren Stewart, Sr., "Dr. Pang's powerful, purposeful, personal accounts of his journey ... are guaranteed to inspire all who read this devotional book."

Faith Journey is written with you in mind.
Many unsung heroes prayed for Patrick along this journey of faith. Some discovered gifts in him. Some gave him accurate assistance in his pilgrimage and progress in the faith of his sovereign Savior. This is a faith journey of one fellow-servant of Christ who drinks from God's well of grace with remarkable regularity. Joyfully, you can drink from that wonderful well also.

Celebrating the Life of Mrs. Sara Taira, written by her son, Dr. Jose Menenedez.
Mrs. Sara Taira, the mother of Dr. Jose Menendez, ABCOFLASH Regional Resource Minister for Latino Ministries, passed away on March 2nd. Please be in prayer for Dr. Mendenez and his family as they mourn her loss and celebrate her life. The Celebration of Life service will take place on Saturday, March 26th at First Baptist Church of South Gate at 2 PM.

Sara was born September 9, 1941 in Agua Caliente, Santa Ana, El Salvador. Her parents were Corleo Berganza and Virgilia Hernández, she moved to Santa Ana to seek a better future, where she worked in different places.
At the age of 29, she immigrated to the United States. Her biggest dream was to provide her three children with a better future, José Menéndez, Maria Teresa Salazar Hernández, and Eugenia Talamantes. She worked hard to bring her children to the United States so they would have a better future. She achieved it with her dedication and sacrifice.

In 1985 she converted to Christianity, she then met Norman Taira originally from Hawaii / Japan whom she married, on November 24, 1985, at the Iglesia Nuevo Nacimiento. Since her conversion, God called her to evangelize and intercede for people who needed support and prayer.

She was called by the Lord on March 2, 2022, at her home after battling cancer. She leaves behind her loving family: her husband Norman, three children, 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 8 brothers, and 3 sisters.
She leaves the legacy of a servant who loved God, a virtuous woman, with great compassion for the lost. Sara was dedicated to teaching and motivating others to persevere in the gospel and commitment to God and dedicate the family as the foundation of society. She's now truly living in the eternal presence of God!

ABCOFLASH Weekly Newsletter - March 10, 2022
Rev. Herb Dominguez passed away in December of 2021. Rev. Dominguez served on the staff of ABC/PSW and as a pastor, interim pastor, and area minister. He was a servant of the Lord missed by his family, ministry colleagues, and First Baptist Church of Redlands family. If you knew Herb, join the Celebration of Life service on zoom this coming Saturday, March 12th at 11 AM Pacific Time.

Dr. Samuel Chetti, ABCOFLASH Executive Minister Emeritus, reflected on his ministry with Herb when they served together with the American Baptist Churches of the Pacific Southwest: "I have known Herb since 1974 during my days as Youth Minister at Temple Baptist Church. I worked with him on various youth and young adult ministry projects. In 1983 the Los Angeles Baptist City Mission Society created a joint appointment with ABCPSW for me to serve with both regions. I was asked to focus on three areas of ministry: young adults, single adults, and Ministries in Higher Education. Rev. Herb Dominguez became my supervisor as the Head of ABCPSW Department of Educational ministries. Besides me, Rev. Robert Neil worked alongside us as director of Camping and Camps. Herb was a very creative and hard-working staff person. He brought the local church laity in consulting on all our educational ministries programs. He created a program called" Educational Ministry Road Shows". He divided the Region into several segments and provided contextual workshops led by practicing leaders to equip the church with skills to do ministry. Rev. Herb Dominguez loved the Region of ABCPSW. His passion was to assist local churches with capacities to do contextual ministry. He was a team player and a pastor of integrity. I shall miss seeing him."

Jeffery Chen from Burmese Christian Church in Covina wrote about his recent trip to Thailand near the border of Myanmar.

"We, Pastor Htwe Nyunt and Jeffrey Chen went to Thailand for a Mission trip from January 6 to 22 of 2022. We went to Mae Sot, and from there, we were able to visit three places near the borders of Thailand and Myanmar. We were able to distribute blankets, food, and daily necessities to about 100 families in need or displaced due to the situation inside Myanmar. Each time before distributing the food, Pastor Htwe was able to share the gospel with the people. We could only plant the seeds of the gospel. We depended upon the Holy Spirit to continue watering the seeds and growing over there. Seeing their smiles and joys on their faces gave us the enjoyment of doing the mission job. We want to thank everyone who made a contribution to this cause. As it said in(Acts 20:35 KJV) "I have showed you all things, how that so laboring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive." Yes. Indeed, it is more blessed to give than to receive. This is the lesson we learned from this mission trip. We give all the glory back to the Good Lord. Amen

Celebrating the Life and Ministry of Rev Delfin Cardinal
Delfin Cardinal was born February 27, 1930 in San Jose, Antique, Philippines to Presbyterian parents. He was baptized on April 20, 1950, as a believer and follower of Jesus Christ. He was nurtured in the new life by Rev. Rafael Masuecos, Pastor of San Jose Evangelical Church. Pastor Delfin passed away on January 17, 2022.

He married Justa Serate, a product of the Iloilo Mission Hospital Training School for Nurses in June 3, 1957. He leaves behind 5 children- Judsen, Faith, Hope, Charity, and Samuel. He also had 12 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Pastor Cardinal graduated from Central Philippine University with a bachelor's in Theology in 1955. He continued to minister in the Philippines until he came to America in 1975. He was ordained in 1978 by the American Baptist Churches of Los Angeles with the help of Dr. Emory Campbell. In 1979 he planted and became the senior of Filipino American Christian Church until he retired in 2017 at the age of 87. His son, Samuel Cardinal became and is presently the senior pastor. During his 38 years of ministry at FACC, he faithfully served God and ministered to hundreds of people- loving, caring, and evangelizing all for the glory of God.

The service to celebrate Rev. Cardinal's life will take place on Saturday, February 26. Further details are forthcoming.

Dr. Samuel Chetti, ABCOFLASH Executive Minister Emeritus reflected on Delfin's life:

"I met Rev. Cardinal, with Dr. Emory Campbell in 1984. Over the years I watched how he has nurtured immigrant families, young and old, into the lifestyle of the Kingdom of God. At a time when it was difficult to find new church plants, he opened his church building in Long Beach for a Hispanic Church to meet at FACC. He lived the values of the Kingdom Of God. When I reflect on Pastor Cardinal's life and leadership, I remember a passage in Ezekiel: " It will become a majestic cedar sending forth its branches and producing seed. Birds of every sort will nest in it, finding shelter in the shade of its branches" Ezekiel 17:23. Rev. Delfin Cardinal was a tall and deeply rooted shepherd of our Lord, like the California Redwood tree. Under his care, many persons flourished, including me. He was my faithful friend and colleague. I shall miss seeing him. I thank God for gifting Delfin to His Church and to our Region."
In January, Rev. Htwe Nyunt from the Burmese Christian Church in Covina traveled to the Thailand/Burma border to donate much-needed supplies to refugees there. The pictures below show those who received the donations from Pastor Htwe. We are thankful that God used Pastor Htwe to be the hands and feet of Jesus with those who are suffering.

Would you please remember to pray for Burma? One year ago, on February 1, the military coup began there, which has inflicted incredible suffering on the people of Burma. The American Baptist Churches USA and the Burma Refugee Commission are calling on on congregations to observe Sunday, February 6 as "Pray and Act for Burma" Sunday. Pastors and church leaders are invited to visit the Burma Refugee Commission page on the ABCUSA website for resources here: www.abc-usa.org/burma-refugee-commission for information about the situation in Burma. Throughout most of his adult life, he was active in the ministry of Ministerios Manantial de Amor. Some of the ministries he served in were: church board; leader of short-term mission trips; coach of the church basketball team; usher ministry; and Director of the Couples Ministry. He also served as the District Pastor as an overseer of small groups in the church. He established theological training centers in Los Angeles and Cuba. Enrique Santis, the pastor of MMDA, said that "he was a spiritual father to hundreds at MMDA and our mission churches. He was a friend to the lonely, a beacon to the lost, a shepherd to the broken, a teacher to his students, a mentor to dozens of leaders." Besides his involvement in church ministry, he also established a funeral business and often gave funeral services to those in need. On December 21, 2021, Joel was received by his heavenly Father in his heavenly home. He is survived by his wife Gabriela Patricia Ceballos, children, grandchildren, and extended family who loved him dearly. We are grateful for the ministry of life of Pastor Joel and continue to pray for his family and church family as they mourn his loss and celebrate his life.

Board Development - Leadership of any organization has the responsibility to govern the organization. When the congregation nominates their leaders they should consider what strengths and skill sets would be best for their particular needs. They should support their leaders as they unite to do God's work. In this workshop, we will talk about ways to ensure the organization discovers what skills your members have and how to encourage all members to step up and take on roles to help their church survive and thrive.

A Statement from ABHMS on January 12, 2022: American Baptist Home Mission Societies (ABHMS) seeks the Lord's guidance as we plan our national event, Space for Grace, with increased sensitivity during these uncertain times. When planning began, we could not have foreseen what was to transpire with COVID-19's Omicron variant.

We remain optimistic that uncertainty will turn to certainty as we continue to pray and to plan for an in-person gathering to be held Sept. 21-23 at the Westin Kansas City (Mo.) at Crown Center. The event will be preceded by the Spiritual Caregivers Conference for chaplains, pastoral counselors, spiritual directors and specialized ministers, Sept. 19-20. Rest assured that both events will follow public health and safety protocols for in-person meetings. Click here to read more....

With women serving in a multitude of ways and a variety of roles throughout the United States and around the world, American Baptist Women in Ministry (ABWIM) is hosting a unique conference: Celebrating Ministering Women: Radical. Redeemed. Ready.

Held at Green Lake Conference Center where the first national gathering of women in ministry occurred in 1980, out of which the Women in Ministry Project was birthed and where American Baptist women have gathered for many years, the conference will feature inspiring speakers, creative worship, engaging workshops, and multiple ways to connect while experiencing innovative approaches to ministry.

Celebrating Ministering Women - We are celebrating women ministerial leaders, their myriad journeys into ministry and their many ways of ministering. We are also celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Women in Ministry Project, now known as American Baptist Women in Ministry (ABWIM), which was fully launched in June 1982 with Rev. Dr. Margaret A. Cowden as the first Project Director.

Radical - ABCUSA has carried out a radical witness, and radical witness is still needed.

Redeemed - Churches flourish and our world is transformed when all God's gifts in all God's people are fully accessed, embraced, and utilized. We are all then redeemed.

READY! We are READY. Are you?

All are Welcome!

And we do mean all...all ministerial roles, experiences, and contexts; all ages, cultures, and genders; American Baptists and any and all friends in faith

That means YOU! Join Us!
