American Baptist Churches of Los Angeles, Southwest & Hawaii
ABCOFLASH lost one of our faithful volunteers, Lena Thurmond, wife of 69 years, to our own Dr. Bill
Thurmond. She spent years ministering to pastor’s wives in the region. Upon news of her passing,
expressions of sympathy came pouring in to Dr. Thurmond.

“…I can only imagine what you are experiencing now. Know that you are loved by friends, family, your
Christian brothers and sisters, and especially God. With this note goes a prayer for you…”
Andy Quient, Executive Minister

May the Lord be with you and your loved ones in a very special way, bringing the consolation of the
Holy Spirit to your hearts. - Praying for you. Miguel and Cristina Albanez, member of the ABCOFLASH
Board of Directors

We want you to know that we love and appreciate you. You and your family are in our prayers as you
are experiencing the loss of your dear Lena. You both have provided all of us with a role model of
marriage and family. We pray for comfort and peace--that you will sense the presence of Christ in a
powerful way, now and in the days ahead. – Rev. Dr. Shawn Zambrows, Chair, Ordination Standards
Committee.

Good day, Ministers and leaders. By this time, you have heard of the passing of Lena Thurmond, wife of
Dr. William Thurmond. I believe we should support him in this time of need. I encourage all of you to let
him know that we love and stand with him with our thoughts and prayers. Dr. Thurmond has been and
continues to be a leader and mentor to many of us. He is a great friend and living history of leadership
in ABCOFLASH. Thank you, and to God be the Glory!
Dr. Walter J. Clarke, President, Black Church Ministries.

I have known Dr. Thurmond and Lena since I came to Los Angeles in 1987. What a blessing to see their
love and care for each other and how they have lived out their calling from God to serve their family,
church and American Baptists in our region together over the past 69 years! My prayer is that Bill and
his family will sense God’s comfort in their grief and in the precious memories they all hold in their
hearts. I have been blessed by Lena’s life and knowing she was a partner with Bill throughout their many
years together. – Rev. Doug Hubbard, Regional Resource Minister - ABCOFLASH

Please know that our hearts and prayers are with you. She is gone but not forgotten. You are not alone.
She is still by your side as she has been for so long. We are here for you. God bless you and your family.
– Lydia Floyd, Member of ABCOFLASH Board of Directors.

I am sorry for the loss of your beloved wife and partner. Our prayers for our Lord's comfort and peace
are with you and your family during this difficult time. Please let us know how we can support and assist
you. – Yours in Christ, David Cheng, President, ABCOFLASH Board of Directors.
Blessings and Peace to you. There are no words to express the depth of your loss. Just know I'm praying.
Dr. Tahlib McMicheaux, Regional Resource Minister, Black Church Ministries

"Mrs. Thurmond was an angel. She was always supportive of my ministry and offered me wise counsel over the years while raising my son, Matthew. She always asked about him, even after he graduated from St. John Bosco High School and attended Fresno State. She was a woman of grace, faith, love and joy!  She will be missed; however, precious memories will always remain in my heart. May God's peace and comfort surround the Thurmond family during this time. May her memory be a benediction. - Grace To Grace Others, Rev. Pamela Elise Davis"

“Mrs. and Sister Lena Thurmond was an influencer and a challenging lady among many women and leaders in our churches; her example of a committed lady of Christ was admired by many of us; she was a readable sister. We will miss her as she is in God’s presence.” – Dr. Jose Menendez, Regional Resource Minister, ABCOFLASH
